Each year, massive congregations of blacktip sharks gather off the coast of South Florida for the winter before embarking on a remarkable northward migration up the U.S. East Coast, reaching as far as north as Long Island. During their stay in Florida, Zeke and his lab-mates capture and tag these sharks with satellite devices. By analyzing the data from these tags alongside variables such as temperature, sunlight, chlorophyll concentration, and seafloor depth, Zeke aims to understand how these environmental factors influence the sharks’ migratory patterns.
Zeke is a master’s student working in the ElasmoLab under Dr. Stephen Kajiura, where he focuses on tracking the seasonal movements of blacktip sharks using advanced satellite tagging technology. With a long-standing fascination for migratory fishes, Zeke explores the reasons behind their movements and behaviors. Join us for our August lecture to dive into the intriguing world of blacktip sharks and discover the science behind their epic journeys.
