Join us at Manatee Lagoon for our February Lecture featuring Jason Jacobs, CEO of Lion Country Safari. In his talk, Jason will explore the critical role of wildlife parks and zoos in global conservation efforts. Discover the challenges faced by wildlife worldwide and learn how these institutions are stepping up to lead future conservation initiatives.
Jason Jacobs is an accomplished zoo professional with a career spanning several decades. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Jason’s passion for wildlife began in his teenage years, which led him to work in zoos from an early age. After attending Florida International University, he became a member of the opening crew at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a pivotal experience in his career.
Upon graduation, Jacobs moved to Los Angeles, where he joined the leadership team at the Los Angeles Zoo. His career expanded into consulting on popular films and television series, including Zootopia and The Jungle Book. A highlight of his time in LA was working alongside Zoo Foundation Chair Betty White, co-authoring her bestselling book Betty and Friends: My Life at the Zoo.
In 2013, Jacobs became the Zoo Director of Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona, where he oversaw the birth of Arizona’s first elephant and played a key role in securing a sales tax dedicated to zoo improvements. His leadership continued to shine as he became CEO of the Sacramento Zoo in 2017, working to plan a new facility in Elk Grove, California, which is slated to open in 2030.
With over 250 zoos visited globally and wildlife safaris across Africa, Asia, and Australia, Jacobs’ extensive experience and passion for wildlife conservation have shaped his career. In December, he became the CEO of Lion Country Safari in Florida, a park with personal significance, as his first visit was at age 11, accompanied by his grandfather, William (Jake) Jacobs, a longtime employee of Florida Power and Light.
Jason Jacobs’ leadership continues to inspire conservation efforts and community engagement in the world of zoos and wildlife protection. He serves on the board of the Okapi Conservation Project and on committees for the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.
